Paul Huber, After thinking about it for awhile, the seeds of EcoStruct-EcoSol were planted over twenty years ago. However, the concept has evolved into a synthesis of many ideas geared to a more sensible and sustainable human existence upon this incredible planet, our natural home amongst the stars. As a teenager I fell in love with Passive Solar design after reading Edward Mazria’s “The Passive Solar Energy Book” (which I eventually “liberated” from my dad). After several detours along a twisty path, I earned a bachelor of science in civil engineering and made my way into construction management. Prior to finishing school, I landed a job working for a mid-sized general contracting firm. I eventually left the commercial contracting business to manage a commercial glass operation, and then onto construction management consulting for a local hospital. Sometime during the second half of the 1990’s, I became aware of the renaissance of straw bale construction via books like “The Straw Bale House” and “Build it with Bales”. Then, in 1998 a series of synchronous events gave me an unexpected opportunity to start my own company - EcoStruct. My goal is to design and build earth friendly structures, utilizing sustainable materials as much as possible, and stirring solar, active solar, and Photovoltaics (PV) into the design mix.
Lori Huber became a journeyman electrician in 1989 following an IBEW 4 year apprenticeship program in Pueblo. For the next nine years Lori worked on many large-scale commercial electric projects as a journeyman electrician, electrical foreman, and later as a wholesale salesperson servicing large commercial accounts in southern Colorado. Lori and Paul started a family in 1997, and EcoStruct in 1998. Since then, Lori has played a critical role in managing EcoStruct as Vice President and Office Manager. In 2005, Lori and Paul started EcoSol to
enhance the renewable energy side of EcoStruct. Early in 2007 Lori
acquired her Master Electrician license from the state of Colorado. She
now guides design and installation of all types of solar systems and
electrical projects for EcoSol.
Mark Whitman has been with EcoStruct for 5 years serving in many capacities, including lead carpenter and foreman. A Colorado native, Mark has owned and operated a successful landscaping and decking company focusing on dryland and native plants and recycled decking materials. Entering into the world of sustainable building has been an exciting, ever growing journey. Mark feels that everyone has a responsibility to lessen his or her ‘ecological footprint’ on this world. His interests in natural building, solar power, and green living, and his love of the outdoors, embodies an energy he hopes others will take an interest in. When not on the job, you may find Mark
backpacking, backcountry skiing, reading, or hanging out with his
family. Mark and his family live off-grid in Beulah, Colorado.
Aaron Fanning is the latest addition to the EcoStruct work family. A California native, Aaron has spent most of his life in Kansas and Colorado, where he has worked as a musician and enjoyed many exploits as bicycle mechanic, vintage automobile enthusiast, and gardener (especially in the realms of cacti and succulents). He feels particularly at home working on EcoStruct projects, having long held a high interest in and dedication to environmental causes. His mechanical problem-solving skills and love of the outdoors also contribute to his enjoyment of this work. When not on the job, you may find Aaron riding or wrenching on bicycles, hiking in the mountains, or playing his drums, cello, guitar, or anything that makes loud noises (including power saws).
